HAITHAM HADDAD

Haitham N. Haddad, Intl Associate AIA

Design Principal

Oku Design, LLC

After 38 years of diversified experience in architecture, from planning and design of hotels and resorts, high-rise residential and custom homes, to houses of worship, schools, healthcare facilities and retail, Haitham, with his lifelong passion for vernacular and sustainable design, decided in 2019 to establish a company that focuses on innovative single-family residences.

Aside from his long and varied experience in the US, Haitham’s international portfolio includes projects in Taiwan, Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt where he worked with world-renowned architect Hassan Fathy. Some of his work is showcased in various national and international publications.

An award-winning designer in the fields of architecture, graphics, illustration and product design, and an accomplished musician and composer as well, Haitham graduated from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 1981 with a six-year Bachelor of Architecture degree at the top of his class, winning the Penrose Award, the University’s highest scholastic honor.

Throughout his years of independent practice in Lebanon, prior to moving to the US, Haitham taught architectural design, regional architecture, freehand sketching and watercolor painting at his Alma Mater, and served as AUB’s Ethnoarchaeology Team Architect in the region. During that period, he was offered a unique opportunity to illustrate children's textbooks – in use today.

Fluent in English, French, and Arabic, Haitham served on the Board of Governors of Alliance Française d'Atlanta from 1993 to 2008, and is the originator and a Founding Board Member (President 2006-2008) of Alif Institute, an Atlanta-based nonprofit cultural and educational center that fosters mutual understanding between the US and the Middle East.
